How to run the UKnow4Kids Live DVD

Once your download is complete, it’s time to burn it to a DVD and run the Live DVD:

1. Burn the ISO file to a DVD
Do NOT burn the ISO file to a DVD as a file (e.g., like an MP3 file).  The file you downloaded is an “ISO,” which is actually a "picture" of how the UKnow4Kids Live DVD looks, so you need to burn the whole ISO image to a DVD. Look for a special option in your DVD burning software that allows you to create a DVD from an ISO file or "disk image."

2. Keep the DVD inside the drive
After successfully burning the DVD, keep your new UKnow4Kids DVD inside your drive.

3. Reboot your computer
With the UKnow4Kids DVD inside, you should reboot and see text scrolling by about Arch Linux and the boot sequence, which you can ignore.  Be sure to set your BIOS to boot from the drive the DVD is in, otherwise your computer will boot from its default location (probably the hard drive).

4. If you do nothing, UKnow4Kids will boot from the Live DVD automatically.
Wait patiently while UKnow4Kids boots up from the DVD.  You'll know the boot process is done when you see the yellow Gcompris airplane logo.  Remember, the Live DVD is not installing itself, it is loading itself into RAM where it will run until the computer is shut down.  Your hard disk and files are completely untouched, and your computer will boot as usual after you remove the Live DVD and restart your computer. Try it and see.

5. Enjoy!

6. Wait a second!
You may be asking yourself, "Which application should I try first?"  I suggest the Gcompris Educational Suite, which starts automatically after UKnow4Kids boots.  GCompris by itself contains numerous games and activities that appeal to younger children.  After Gcompris, I suggest TuxPaint, which can be activated from an icon on the lower-left side of the taskbar.  Kids get a real kick out of drawing on the computer.  TuxMath is also popular as a drill for addition and subtraction based on the old game Missile Command.  TuxMath is also accessible from an icon on the taskbar.  Even more educational applications can be found by clicking the button on the lower-left of the taskbar (it's like the Start button in Windows).
