To help those who are "shopping around" for an educational linux distribution, I've included a list of distributions I am aware of. They all have their merits, but as I wrote in Details, some projects are aimed at a server environment and others appear to be dormant.
- Edubuntu: an Ubuntu-based
(natch)
educational distribution.
- Edulinux: a distribution from Chile.
- Foresight
for Kids: a collection of educational and entertainment software
based on the Foresight Linux
distribution.
- K12Linux: a more up-to-date
cousin of
K12LSTP built on Fedora, and definitely server-oriented.
- K12LTSP: considered a "legacy" distribution, K12LTSP is definitely server-oriented, and built on CentOS and the Linux Terminal Server Project.
- LinuxKidX:
a collection of educational software. The default language is
Portuguese, but an English version is available.
- Qimo for Kids: released as
version 1.0 in February 2009, this distribution has similar design aims
as UKnow4Kids. It is built on Ubuntu.
- Skolelinux: an
educational
distribution aimed at the server environment.
- Squeak Etoys: not a
distribution, but a standalone educational application that runs on
Linux, Mac, and Windows.
- Sugar Learning Platform: a
software environment formerly used for the One
Laptop per Child program. The user interface is
radically visual, and the environment can load numerous educational
applications.
